Studio and Field Paintings

"Don't try to paint good landscapes. Try to paint canvases that will show how interesting

landscape looks to you--your pleasure in the thing."

-Robert Henri

Welcome to my page, and thank you for sharing your time with me and my paintings. My practice takes me to the field to paint most days. Then I bring my sketches back to the studio and prop them up somewhere and leave them. As days go by I glance at the sketch as I pass it, or will just sit and gaze at it, coffee in hand, for a while. Eventually I decide whether it makes the leap into a frame or gets shelved with the hundreds of other pieces of "practice" that I keep on hand, ready for review at a later date or to be painted over. Once in a while (a long while lately) a sketch inspires me to create a larger painting. That's a great moment for me, when I finally decide that I have not just a keeper, but a piece that moves me to explore further the ideas that I found so compelling in the field.  Please enjoy these paintings for what they are, an expression of how interesting the world looks to me; my pleasure in the thing.
